Happy Chinese Dragon Boat Festival! \u9f99\u821f\u8282\u5feb\u4e50\uff01<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Dragon Boat Festival, or Duanwu Festival (\u7aef\u5348\u8282 Du\u0101nw\u01d4 ji\u00e9<\/em>), is a traditional Chinese festival with a history of over 2000 years. It occurs on the 5th day of the 5th month in Chinese lunar calendar, which falls on Friday 3rd June this year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Duanwu Festival is widely known as Dragon Boat Festival (\u9f99\u821f\u8282 L\u00f3ngzh\u014du ji\u00e9<\/em>) to the rest of the world, as one of its celebrative events \u2013 dragon boat racing \u2013 has become so popular (\u53d7\u6b22\u8fce sh\u00f2u hu\u0101ny\u00edng<\/em>) in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, we would like to invite Dr YAO Xudan (\u59da\u65ed\u4e39) to introduce dragon boat racing and share with us her interesting experiences of joining in races when she was in Belfast and more recently in Manchester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

YAO Xudan (\u59da\u65ed\u4e39) studied her PhD in Queen\u2019s University Belfast from 2014 to 2018. Afterwards, she joined the National Graphene Institute, University of Manchester, as a postdoctoral research associate. Currently, she is continuing her research in Queen Mary College, University of London.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Dragon Boat Racing in Belfast<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I was doing my PhD at Queen’s, I joined dragon boat racing as a paddler twice in 2015 and 2016, as a member of Team QUB, which were organised by Chinese Welfare Association NI. People from different professional backgrounds, including universities, associations, boat clubs, etc., signed up for the events with full enthusiasm. Chinese food was prepared and supplied to all participants. Although we did not win in the end, everyone enjoyed the teamwork spirit (\u56e2\u961f\u7cbe\u795e tu\u00e1ndu\u00ec j\u012bngsh\u00e9n<\/em>) during racing, despite the bad weather. My colleagues from Spain and India were so excited that they wanted very much to follow up celebrations as such in the future. I believe that our traditional culture (\u4f20\u7edf\u6587\u5316 chu\u00e1nt\u01d2ng w\u00e9nhu\u00e0<\/em>) could be shared and accepted widely in this engaging way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
