This brings us into line with RDA (Resource Description and Access) cataloguing principles \u2013 a revised approach to cataloguing currently being adopted by the library community. The new description rules will only affect new and revised entries in our catalogue and the immediate impact will be relatively slight.<\/p>\n<p>The main changes are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No more use of standard abbreviations in edition statements and elsewhere (edition statements transcribed as they are in the source; \u2018pages\u2019, \u2018illustrations\u2019 etc spelled out).<\/li>\n<li>Additional designators, \u2018author\u2019, \u2018editor\u2019, \u2018illustrator\u2019 etc, follow names given in the catalogue record (these can be seen under \u2018added authors\u2019 in the full catalogue record)<\/li>\n<li>&#8216;[electronic resource]&#8217; and &#8216;[videorecording]&#8217; no longer to be used as an addition to the title entry for non-print material \u00a0(ebooks, \u00a0ejournals and DVDs).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The long term strategy for RDA is to create an approach to catalogues and cataloguing in which different \u2018expressions\u2019 of works \u2013 e.g. various editions, translations etc \u2013 are grouped together under entries for a work. Different media \u2018manifestations\u2019 are also to be described more exactly.
