{"id":291,"date":"2024-10-08T15:28:50","date_gmt":"2024-10-08T14:28:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/law-study-skills\/?p=291"},"modified":"2024-10-08T15:31:40","modified_gmt":"2024-10-08T14:31:40","slug":"top-tips-for-getting-ready-for-law-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/law-study-skills\/2024\/10\/08\/top-tips-for-getting-ready-for-law-school\/","title":{"rendered":"Top Tips for Getting Ready for Law School"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Familiarise yourself with:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Law school: locations for classes particularly, get used to room names &amp; numbers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Queen\u2019s Film Theatre, Students Union, the Gym (PEC), study rooms, library<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The library: accessing books, journal articles, booking study rooms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contacts: student support, law school admin, module co-ordinator, law librarian, SSAs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assignment dates and module handbook, content breakdown and reading weeks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Get organised<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Structure your week into blocks around classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-neve-link-hover-color-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">Check emails &amp; messages: download the outlook and canvas apps to keep up to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Finding what works<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Find your note-taking style, where when and how you work best, try things out<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Know how to obtain academic resources<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-neve-link-color-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">Get used to getting readings normally from Canvas, also online through library and websites like Westlaw and Lexis which provide cases and journal articles.<br><br><strong>Workshops on finding resources<\/strong> &gt; Wed 16th October, 1pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Developing good habits<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Build a routine that works for you, make studying a habit and something that naturally fits into the time you set aside for it. Block out some time for class preparation.<br>Always try and get to lectures and tutorials, in-person time really matters.<br>Accountability can help a lot, have friends to meet up with and organise study time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Class Preparation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Have a hard copy of the module handbook, great for reference and an overview.<br>Summarise readings, there are plenty websites to access case summaries and notes.<br>This is a great opportunity to develop skills in legal reading and note-taking for assessments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-nv-c-2-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Workshop on structuring an answer to a problem question<\/strong> &gt; Wed 30th October, 1pm<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Asking for help<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s really important to know where you can go for help, so it\u2019s easy if you need it:<br>Personal tutors, module conveners, student services in SU, Student Skills Assistants.<br>When you ask a question it can help everyone, it\u2019s ok not to know everything!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Immerse yourself<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are loads of events in the law school, advertised on canvas &amp; email<br>QUB offers so many clubs and societies, including many within Law &#8211; these include the<br>Law Society, Women in Law, LawPod, Mooting, The Verdict, Animal Law.
