Top Tips for Getting Ready for Law School

Familiarise yourself with:

  • Law school: locations for classes particularly, get used to room names & numbers
  • Queen’s Film Theatre, Students Union, the Gym (PEC), study rooms, library
  • The library: accessing books, journal articles, booking study rooms
  • Contacts: student support, law school admin, module co-ordinator, law librarian, SSAs
  • Assignment dates and module handbook, content breakdown and reading weeks

Get organised

Structure your week into blocks around classes.

Finding what works

Find your note-taking style, where when and how you work best, try things out

Know how to obtain academic resources

Developing good habits

Build a routine that works for you, make studying a habit and something that naturally fits into the time you set aside for it. Block out some time for class preparation.
Always try and get to lectures and tutorials, in-person time really matters.
Accountability can help a lot, have friends to meet up with and organise study time.

Class Preparation

Have a hard copy of the module handbook, great for reference and an overview.
Summarise readings, there are plenty websites to access case summaries and notes.
This is a great opportunity to develop skills in legal reading and note-taking for assessments.

Asking for help

It’s really important to know where you can go for help, so it’s easy if you need it:
Personal tutors, module conveners, student services in SU, Student Skills Assistants.
When you ask a question it can help everyone, it’s ok not to know everything!

Immerse yourself

There are loads of events in the law school, advertised on canvas & email
QUB offers so many clubs and societies, including many within Law – these include the
Law Society, Women in Law, LawPod, Mooting, The Verdict, Animal Law. Get involved!
