Request a literature search on-line

If you are a member of the Medical & HSC Library, you can now request literature searches from your Subject Librarian.

Ultimately, it is best if you carry out your own searches. But, if you are short on time, or struggling to find results, your Subject Librarian can carry out searches for you, in the databases of your choice.

Northern Trust Libraries Amalgamate

The library previously based in Holywell Hospital has amalgamated with HSC Library Antrim based in Fern House, Antrim Hospital.

Stock held in this library moved  to Fern House during August 2016.

To join the library, borrow books, place online requests and avail of the many other services the library provides including training in the use of electronic resources provided for HSC staff via HONNI, please contact the library.

Medical & HSC Library Impact Survey

The Medical & HSC Library ran an impact survey from 1st – 24th June 2016 to help to identify the value of the library service to HSC staff. We were pleased to receive over a hundred detailed responses providing us with valuable evidence of the positive impact of our service.

The case studies provided strongly highlighted the importance of evidence-based practice and our role in providing the information that underpins this. The responses broadly fell into the categories shown in the chart below.

Can you trace a recommended article on deafblindness? Librarian sourced article from library network Key knowledge obtained which influenced professional practice meeting RQIA requirement
Is there evidence on sibling separation and risk assessment models for perpetrators of domestic abuse and child sex abuse? Librarian promptly sourced key current information. The Court Children’s Service for NHSCT use the knowledgeable, professional expertise available in Antrim Library to keep abreast of legislative and research developments Evidence- based recommendations assisted the court in making orders with confidence that this was in the best interests of the subject children involved. The results reduced the need for costly, protracted and delayed court proceedings particularly appeals. Well informed evidence based recommendations are more likely to be accepted by contesting parties and less likely to be appealed.
Is a genetic variant found in a patient causing their symptoms? Librarian was able to find the relevant article through Queen’s Library The research confirmed that the pathogenic variant found was most likely the cause of the symptoms and other family members could be tested for the variant and treated early if necessary.
How can evidence be sourced to assist a safety, quality and experience project? Librarian provided step by step assistance in accessing journal articles The evidence facilitated greater awareness of FASD and standardisation of practice, contributing to improved quality of care and significant cost savings.
What quality information is available on oedemas and wound care? Librarian provided guidance on high quality books and refereed journals. The information provided was used to develop support materials for patients with learning difficulties, reducing the need for unscheduled care and reducing related costs.
Can you assist with a literature search on the effectiveness of entonox during colonoscopy? Librarian obtained journal articles and demonstrated saved searches, search alerts and translation of non-English articles. The research will contribute to increased patient flow and lower costs in day procedure units and a reduction in the amount of IV sedation required for colonoscopy, reducing risk to patients.
How can core reading material be acquired for an ultrasound scanning course? Librarian provided professional support and suggested books and articles which would help with course work. Resources provided facilitated professional development through study and the enhancement of practice by increasing practitioners’ core skills.


The results of the survey will be invaluable to us in reporting to the Department of Health and to support future requests for enhanced funding. We constantly seek to improve our services to HSC staff but there is a significant cost attached to this both in terms of staffing and resources. In the current financial climate it is extremely important to be able to prove the value of our services and your input is crucial to this.
