When creating a video (e.g. a screencast, presentation, lecture, training focused on a short tutorial style etc.), there are a few basic steps that should be followed in order to assure your video content is accessible.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/aem.cast.org\/navigating\/teaching-with-accessible-video.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>AEM at CAST<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0highlight why using video is a great way to ensure UDL:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Engagement:<\/strong>\u00a0Video can be a powerful tool for engaging learners by recruiting and sustaining their interest around a particular topic in a way that print might not.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Representation:<\/strong>\u00a0Video can provide another option for learners who struggle with print to access and interpret information.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Action &amp; Expression:<\/strong>\u00a0Video creation can provide learners with additional options for demonstrating their understanding in ways that tap into their creativity and enhance relevance and authenticity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><!-- \/wp:list --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>CED have developed an <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/go.qub.ac.uk\/AccessibilityChecklist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Accessibility Checklist<\/a><\/strong> that incorporates a full list of inclusive accessible design practices for consideration when developing content. Posing a question or statement to \u2018hook\u2019 or introduce a new or key topic or concept is one of many ways to do this. Like a flipped learning approach, video can be watch at the learner\u2019s own time freeing up class time for deeper discussions, dialogue and debate &#8211; interactive activities that support meaning making.\u00a0Even more powerful is asking learners to design and develop their own videos to showcase their knowledge and understanding of content as an alternative form of assessment.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>You could create a welcome video highlighting your own interests and how you are looking forward to working with everyone. Ask learners to post their own video highlighting 2 to 3 things about themselves to build a learning community.\u00a0Make an introductory video of the course that outlines broadly the syllabus, course layout, assignments, contact information, important dates and a walk-through of the module.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-36677d1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"36677d1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">1. If you are planing to screencast, then you will need to do a few practice runs first. Draw a mind map or diagram of what you will discuss or focus on in the video. Keep it short<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0f85083 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0f85083\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>There are numerous reasons why videos should be kept between 6-10 minutes in length:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ease of navigation allowing learners to focus their attention on specific topics<\/li>\n<li>higher engagement and motivation<\/li>\n<li>promotes digital literacy and self-directed learning<\/li>\n<li>reduces the likelihood of feeling overwhelmed with large amounts of content<\/li>\n<li>access for learners with low bandwidth<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you want to record longer videos, do consider if it is possible to break the content up or chunk into smaller bite-size videos.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-48758e3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"48758e3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">3. High Quality Audio<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5af99c3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5af99c3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>High quality audio is more important that video quality.<\/strong>\u00a0It is vital that you speak at a pace that is clear and understandable to all learners. Clear dictation and enunciation are important. Avoid dialect or localised terms where some learners may not understand the content. If learners cannot hear you speak clearly or there is a crackling sound due to the audio quality, a headset may be required in cases where your built-in mic is not effectively picking up the sound.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e7c3b7e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e7c3b7e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">4. Minimise distractions<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-42c34bf elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"42c34bf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>There are a number of distractions that can occur in video or audio recordings, such a dog barking, fan, boiler, drilling or road works or kids in the background. Where possible, try to minimise background noise. \u00a0Avoid recording with a laptop on your lap, as it causes a vibration and it can be very distracting and often does not compliment your profile.\u00a0If you are using your mobile phone to record, ensure it is positioned at face height and held in a steady position so it will not fall mid recording. Ensure you background is uncluttered. If sharing your screen, minimise or close all other applications to avoid showing any unnecessary or personal material.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f1db74a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f1db74a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">5. Being on camera<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-194bd55 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"194bd55\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>If you decide to record a video that includes your face, often referred to as the \u2018bopping head\u2019, you need to think about a few things beforehand. Sit or stand with a window either in front of you or to the side. Try to avoid a window from behind as it causes a silhouette and your face is darkened out and difficult to see. Minimise the view and move the small video reflection of yourself which is usually pinned to the corner of the screen, in a position where you are not blocking key text or important information.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ce1c2a4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ce1c2a4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">6. Including Visuals (Graphs, Diagrams, Formulas, Images, Charts)<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2b4ebdf elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2b4ebdf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>If you are recording a video that includes visual representations, then it is important to think about how you describe the content. Try to avoid terms like\u00a0<em>\u2018look here\u2019,\u00a0\u2018as you can see\u2019<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em>\u2018it is evident from the diagram\u2019<\/em>\u00a0without also fully describing what is included in the visual.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-233de18 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"233de18\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">7. Transcriptions<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-725398f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"725398f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Video transcription is the process of translating the audio contained in the video\u2019s into text. The process can be done with automatic speech recognition, human transcriptionists or a combination of the two. \u00a0A transcription also make is easier to search the video for keywords or topics.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} --><!-- \/wp:heading --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4606522 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"4606522\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">8. Subtitles and Captions<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ff56219 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ff56219\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Subtitles<\/strong>\u00a0assume the viewer can hear the audio and are often used for reading in another language. Subtitles for the deaf or hard of hearing include things like [siren] or [music playing in the background].<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/webaim.org\/techniques\/tables\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Captions<\/strong>\u00a0are a text version of the spoken part of the video or presentation. Captions have always been a legal requirement for deaf and hard of hearing. However, with the new Accessibility legislation all HEI\u2019s are now expected to have captions on videos.<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/webaim.org\/techniques\/tables\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Incorporating captions assist everyone and are particularly useful for:<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/webaim.org\/techniques\/tables\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:list --><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>second language learners<\/li>\n<li>identifying specialised or an unfamiliar vocabulary (legal, scientific or medical)<\/li>\n<li>understanding and pronunciation<\/li>\n<li>enhancing the video experience when in a noisy environment (gym, commuting, airport)<\/li>\n<li>watching the video where you need to keep the sound off (sharing a space)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are a number of services that provide automatic captioning or other tools where you can upload and edit captions. The easiest way to provide captions in QUB is to upload your video content to <a href=\"https:\/\/web.microsoftstream.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Microsoft Stream<\/strong><\/a> (available through Office 365), where closed captions will be auto-generated for you.
