In this blog post we will consider the tools in Canvas that enable objective testing to be used as a learning opportunity.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0ccffa5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"0ccffa5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Setting expectations<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-583b93f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"583b93f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>If using objective test questions for formative assessment, the focus of the quiz can be turned from a focus on whether or not the answer chosen was correct, to the <strong>use of the quiz as a learning tool<\/strong>. One effective way to do this is to use Canvas features to give detailed specific feedback on each question in order to:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:list {\"ordered\":true} --><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Ensure that the learner understands <strong>why <\/strong>they got the question wrong (or right!).<\/li>\n<li>Provide an opportunity for the learner to <strong>consider the other options<\/strong> (distractors) and why they might have been chosen.<\/li>\n<li>Direct the learner to <strong>further learning resources<\/strong> that will enhance their understanding of the topic.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>In order to achieve this, the learner must be informed clearly at the start of the quiz that it is not designed to <strong>only <\/strong>test their knowledge and understanding, but to be <strong>used as a tool for learning<\/strong>. The distractors that are chosen <strong>must be chosen for a reason<\/strong> such as a common or likely error, or a very similar concept that is often confused. This box appears to learners <strong>regardless of the answer that they selected<\/strong>. The expectation is that the students <strong>take time to explore the feedback and additional resources<\/strong> related to the questions, not get through a volume of questions with no feedback.
