those phrases we hear everywhere in higher education. Students are told to develop it, staff are encouraged to model it, and whole strategies are being written around it. But what does it actually mean,\u00a0 and why should it matter to you?<\/p><p data-start=\"461\" data-end=\"766\">Across universities, we ask people to read AI guidance, attend workshops, or complete short courses designed to develop their AI literacy. These are valuable resources, but are we missing the most important step? Before we can expect people to engage with training, we need to give them a reason to care.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0132a23 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"0132a23\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-474ed85 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"474ed85\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What AI Literacy Means to Me<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c608e09 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c608e09\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"802\" data-end=\"1051\">When I talk about AI literacy, I\u2019m not talking about becoming an expert in the technology behind it. You don\u2019t need to know how to build an AI system to use one well. For me, AI literacy is about three things: awareness, judgement, and confidence.<\/p><p data-start=\"1053\" data-end=\"1540\"><strong>Awareness<\/strong>\u00a0is about understanding how AI tools actually work in practice, what they\u2019re good at, where they\u2019re unreliable, and why they sometimes produce convincing but inaccurate results.<\/p><p data-start=\"1053\" data-end=\"1540\"><strong>Judgement<\/strong>\u00a0is about deciding how and when to use AI: asking the right questions, checking the answers carefully, and knowing when it\u2019s better not to use the tool at all.<\/p><p data-start=\"1053\" data-end=\"1540\"><strong>Confidence<\/strong>\u00a0comes from building those first two, so that you can use AI in ways that are purposeful, safe, and genuinely useful.<\/p><p data-start=\"1542\" data-end=\"1661\">In other words, AI literacy, at least as I see it, is about navigating this new landscape with critical confidence.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cd2b764 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"cd2b764\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9c96d98 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9c96d98\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why It Matters<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5f71d01 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5f71d01\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"1684\" data-end=\"1765\">AI literacy applies to everyone in higher education, but for different reasons.<\/p><p data-start=\"1769\" data-end=\"2191\"><strong data-start=\"1769\" data-end=\"1785\">For students<\/strong>, the link is direct: employability. Most graduates will enter workplaces where AI is already part of everyday practice. Employers will expect them to use AI tools confidently, responsibly, and in ways that add value, without exposing the organisation to risk. AI literacy is what makes the difference between using AI to cut corners and using it to contribute effectively in a professional environment.<\/p><p data-start=\"2195\" data-end=\"2692\"><strong data-start=\"2195\" data-end=\"2208\">For staff<\/strong>, the case is just as important. Teaching and assessment must stay relevant to the world students are preparing for. If staff don\u2019t understand how AI tools behave in practice, they risk creating tasks that feel outdated or easily undermined. Staff also have a responsibility to model safe and ethical use, and to guide students in developing the judgement they will need beyond university. Without AI literacy, it\u2019s impossible to set fair expectations or support students in building their own skills.<\/p><p data-start=\"2694\" data-end=\"2705\">In short:<\/p><p data-start=\"2708\" data-end=\"2790\"><strong data-start=\"2708\" data-end=\"2720\">Students<\/strong>\u00a0need AI literacy to be employable and trustworthy in the workplace.<\/p><p data-start=\"2793\" data-end=\"2894\"><strong data-start=\"2793\" data-end=\"2802\">Staff<\/strong>\u00a0need AI literacy to keep higher education meaningful and responsible in an AI-rich world.<\/p><p data-start=\"2896\" data-end=\"3344\">This isn\u2019t just a personal concern. In our most recent Digitally Enhanced Education Webinar,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/fO2PDO4MoFs?si=y-RShBQ4hlMo8E8i\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em data-start=\"2993\" data-end=\"3053\">Rethinking Our Guidance on AI: What\u2019s Working, What Isn\u2019t?<\/em><\/a><\/strong>, more than 1,000 colleagues from across the sector joined the discussion. That level of engagement shows how widely these questions are being asked. Institutions everywhere are trying to work out not only what guidance to give, but how to make sure people have a real reason to follow it.<\/p><p data-start=\"3346\" data-end=\"3883\">And this debate isn\u2019t happening in isolation. The UK government has recently\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/north-east-england-set-for-billions-in-investment-and-thousands-of-jobs-as-uk-and-us-ink-tech-partnership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced billions of pounds of investment in AI infrastructure<\/a><\/strong>, research, and growth zones, with the aim of creating thousands of jobs and attracting major international partners. That level of national commitment underlines the point: AI is not a passing trend. It will shape the workplace our graduates step into and the environment our universities operate within. Developing AI literacy is about making sure staff and students are ready for that future.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1fdf794 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"1fdf794\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9c00211 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9c00211\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Making the Case for AI Literacy<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2a133f5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2a133f5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"3972\" data-end=\"4142\">If we want students and staff to engage with the guidance and resources we provide, we have to make the \u201cwhy\u201d impossible to ignore. A few ways institutions can do this:<\/p><ul data-start=\"4144\" data-end=\"5276\"><li data-start=\"4144\" data-end=\"4419\"><p data-start=\"4146\" data-end=\"4419\"><strong data-start=\"4146\" data-end=\"4186\">Show the employability link clearly.<\/strong>\u00a0Connect AI literacy directly to workplace expectations, internships, and graduate destinations. Make it obvious that employers want graduates who can use AI responsibly \u2014 and that not having these skills could limit opportunities.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"4421\" data-end=\"4629\"><p data-start=\"4423\" data-end=\"4629\"><strong data-start=\"4423\" data-end=\"4457\">Highlight national investment.<\/strong>\u00a0With billions being invested in AI growth zones and research, we need to show students and staff that this is shaping the environment they\u2019ll be working and studying in.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"4631\" data-end=\"4850\"><p data-start=\"4633\" data-end=\"4850\"><strong data-start=\"4633\" data-end=\"4665\">Embed relevance in teaching.<\/strong>\u00a0Don\u2019t leave AI literacy as an optional extra. When students see it applied directly in their courses, in assessments, discussions, or project work, the message lands more strongly.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"4852\" data-end=\"5023\"><p data-start=\"4854\" data-end=\"5023\"><strong data-start=\"4854\" data-end=\"4878\">Model good practice.<\/strong>\u00a0Staff confidence is key. If students see their lecturers using AI transparently and responsibly, they\u2019re more likely to mirror that behaviour.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"5025\" data-end=\"5276\"><p data-start=\"5027\" data-end=\"5276\"><strong data-start=\"5027\" data-end=\"5067\">Frame it as essential, not optional.<\/strong>\u00a0Just as digital literacy became a baseline expectation a decade ago, AI literacy is becoming one now. Institutions need to be clear: this is part of being ready for study, for work, and for the wider world.<\/p><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6fc720e e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"6fc720e\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e213a17 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e213a17\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Risks of Ignoring It<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0bcf9f0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0bcf9f0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"5308\" data-end=\"5673\">Without AI literacy, it\u2019s all too easy for students to be misled by inaccurate outputs or to lean on AI in ways that undermine their own learning. For staff, the risk is that assessments or teaching approaches don\u2019t stand up in an AI-rich world. And for universities as a whole, the bigger danger is producing graduates who aren\u2019t ready for the realities of work.<\/p><p data-start=\"5675\" data-end=\"5991\">This conversation will keep evolving.
