{"id":13119,"date":"2022-05-05T15:33:12","date_gmt":"2022-05-05T14:33:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/digitallearning-2023\/?p=13119"},"modified":"2025-01-07T14:51:37","modified_gmt":"2025-01-07T14:51:37","slug":"anonymous-marking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/digitallearning\/blog\/anonymous-marking\/","title":{"rendered":"Anonymous Marking"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"13119\" class=\"elementor elementor-13119\" data-elementor-post-type=\"post\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0613919 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"0613919\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-eb809f2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"eb809f2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The QUB Handbook of Assessment Guidance and Support 2021-22 requires Anonymous Marking for assessment, where possible.\u00a0 The way in which Canvas applies fully anonymous grading means that schools may have difficulty when it comes to identifying students with exceptional circumstances or late submissions.\u00a0 This is an issue common across all UK Universities who are currently using anonymous marking functionality in Canvas.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-721f65f elementor-widget elementor-widget-hub_fancy_heading\" data-id=\"721f65f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"hub_fancy_heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t<div id=\"ld-fancy-heading-69f8c4852a8f3\" class=\"ld-fancy-heading pos-rel\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"ld-fh-element d-inline-block pos-rel  elementor-heading-title lqd-highlight-custom lqd-highlight-custom-2 h2\"  > Anonymous Grading functionality in Canvas<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d75c697 elementor-widget elementor-widget-hub_fancy_heading\" data-id=\"d75c697\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"hub_fancy_heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t<div id=\"ld-fancy-heading-69f8c4852b0f3\" class=\"ld-fancy-heading pos-rel\">\n\t\t\t<h3 class=\"ld-fh-element d-inline-block pos-rel  elementor-heading-title lqd-highlight-custom lqd-highlight-custom-2 h3\"  > Canvas Assignment using Anonymous Grading<\/h3>\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6cdcbeb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6cdcbeb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Once anonymous grading is enabled in a Canvas Assignment (by selection the setting &#8211; \u2018<em>Graders cannot view student names checkbox<\/em>\u2019), the following is true:<\/p><ul><li>Students cannot be identified from this point onwards until marks\/feedback have been released<\/li><li>Selecting anonymous grading will automatically set the assignment to manual posting policy<\/li><li>Student names become student numbers \u2018Student 1\u2019, \u2018Student 2\u2019, \u2018Student 3\u2019 \u2026 however the student numbers are not persistent<\/li><li>In the Gradebook the Assignment column will be greyed out for any assignment where anonymous marking is enabled &#8211; this includes when the Gradebook is exported and persists until the marks\/feedback are released.<\/li><li>Grades can only be posted to everyone in anonymous assignments<\/li><li>Posting marks\/feedback will remove anonymity<\/li><li>Although it is not recommended to toggle Anonymous Grading on\/off, if this happens, the Gradebook History will record the action e.g. the Gradebook History page displays an icon showing that the assignment was previously graded anonymously.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8f4b029 elementor-widget elementor-widget-hub_fancy_heading\" data-id=\"8f4b029\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"hub_fancy_heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t<div id=\"ld-fancy-heading-69f8c4852c04e\" class=\"ld-fancy-heading pos-rel\">\n\t\t\t<h3 class=\"ld-fh-element d-inline-block pos-rel  elementor-heading-title lqd-highlight-custom lqd-highlight-custom-2 h3\"  > Turnitin Assignment in Canvas using Anonymous Grading<\/h3>\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-32c074d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"32c074d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The issues listed above apply also to Anonymous Turnitin Assignments in Canvas, with some additional considerations outlined below:<\/p><ul><li>Turnitin Assignments do not support differentiated due dates. Meaning staff are unable to assign multiple due dates for students who have different deadlines to the rest of the class.<\/li><li>Feedback Release date &#8211; It is recommended that the Feedback Release date in Turnitin is set to a date far into the future otherwise the Turnitin settings will conflict with settings in Canvas SpeedGrader i.e. anonymity will be broken and marks\/feedback will be released.<\/li><li>Once the Feedback Release Date has been reached it will not be possible to switch Anonymity back on within the Turnitin Assignment Inbox by amending the Feedback Release date.<\/li><li>Once submissions have been made it is not possible to turn anonymity on\/off within the Canvas Assignment Settings. This would result in an error message which prevents students from submitting and the academic from seeing students\u2019 submissions\/ similarity reports in the Turnitin Assignment Inbox.<\/li><li>An error message will appear if the Feedback Release Date is the same as the Canvas set due date or if students attempt to submit after the feedback release date has passed.<\/li><li>Staff members can break anonymity by selecting the \u201cReveal authors name\u201d within the Turnitin Assignment Inbox which reveals the name of the student who made the submission.<\/li><li>Turnitin <strong>does not allow resubmissions <\/strong>to be made <strong>once<\/strong> the assignment <strong>Due date<\/strong> has been reached i.e. if a student has already made a submission, they will not be able to make another submission after the due date has passed.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d705981 elementor-widget elementor-widget-hub_fancy_heading\" data-id=\"d705981\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"hub_fancy_heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t<div id=\"ld-fancy-heading-69f8c4852d094\" class=\"ld-fancy-heading pos-rel\">\n\t\t\t<h3 class=\"ld-fh-element d-inline-block pos-rel  elementor-heading-title lqd-highlight-custom lqd-highlight-custom-2 h3\"  > Canvas functionality that may help in specific scenarios<\/h3>\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f549598 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f549598\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>There is functionality in canvas that can help:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Differentiated due date<\/strong> \u2013 If you are aware of student requirements upfront, then you can give those students a personalised due date in Canvas. <em>Remember that that Turnitin does not support differentiate due dates<\/em>.\u00a0 (<span style=\"font-size: 12px\">\ud83d\udd17<\/span> Link to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/digitallearning\/2020\/12\/15\/set-up-and-administration-of-assignments\/\">guidance on due dates<\/a><\/strong>)<\/li><li>\u2018<strong>Notes\u2019 column in the Gradebook<\/strong> &#8211; you can add notes to gradebook to flag up things like exceptional circumstances but be aware that any staff member who can view the gradebook can also read the notes (\ud83d\udd17 Link to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/t5\/Instructor-Guide\/How-do-I-use-the-Notes-column-in-the-Gradebook\/ta-p\/940\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">guidance on Notes<\/a><\/strong>)<\/li><\/ul><p>Other potential solutions:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Create a separate assignment <\/strong>for late submissions<\/li><li><strong>Assign students an anonymous number<\/strong> to include in the submission file name. For more info on this, contact <strong><a href=\"mailto:ced@qub.ac.uk\">ced@qub.ac.uk<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9dda348 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"9dda348\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-02069fc elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"02069fc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<header class=\"entry-header\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 24px\">\u26a0<\/span> <\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">When using Turnitin, it is essential to have a good understanding of the latest guidance and recommended settings in order to achieve the desired outcomes.\u00a0 Use of Turnitin is not suitable during online examinations.
