{"id":12817,"date":"2022-01-25T09:44:37","date_gmt":"2022-01-25T09:44:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/digitallearning-2023\/?p=12817"},"modified":"2025-01-07T14:54:15","modified_gmt":"2025-01-07T14:54:15","slug":"accessibility-latex","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/digitallearning\/blog\/accessibility-latex\/","title":{"rendered":"Accessibility, Latex and Me"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"12817\" class=\"elementor elementor-12817\" data-elementor-post-type=\"post\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7b3e674 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"7b3e674\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-eddebe1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"eddebe1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>With the integration of \u2018<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/digitallearning\/2021\/05\/18\/blackboard-ally-and-canvas\/\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/digitallearning-2023\/2021\/05\/18\/blackboard-ally-and-canvas\/\">Blackboard Ally Course Accessibility Report<\/a><\/strong>\u2019 into\u00a0Canvas, we can now quickly check the extent to which the content of our Canvas modules is accessible. Most content generated within Canvas or using Microsoft products is likely to get a \u2018good\u2019 accessibility score with helpful suggestions for how to address outstanding issues (e.g. providing alternative text for images). However, many of us are faced with high-value but low-scoring content curated over many years using bespoke software.<\/p><p>This is particularly true for those who use the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latex-project.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/www.latex-project.org\/\"><strong>LaTeX<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0typesetting system which does not automatically generate the tagged PDF output necessary for accessibility readers. This can be quickly checked by looking at the properties (under the file menu) of PDFs opened in Adobe Acrobat Reader.<\/p><p>While the LaTeX community is aware of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latex-project.org\/news\/2020\/11\/30\/tagged-pdf-FS-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/www.latex-project.org\/news\/2020\/11\/30\/tagged-pdf-FS-study\/\"><strong>problem<\/strong><\/a>, no simple solution appears to be sight. Meanwhile, academic institutions are proposing various workaround, for example:<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gla.ac.uk\/myglasgow\/digitalaccessibility\/stemsubjects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/www.gla.ac.uk\/myglasgow\/digitalaccessibility\/stemsubjects\/\">University of Glasgow<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/portal.lancaster.ac.uk\/ask\/checklist-latex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/answers.lancaster.ac.uk\/display\/ISS\/Accessibility+checklist+for+LaTeX+documents\">Lancaster University<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.lib.msu.edu\/c.php?g=995742&amp;p=8207771\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-uw-rm-brl=\"PR\" data-uw-original-href=\"https:\/\/libguides.lib.msu.edu\/c.php?g=995742&amp;p=8207771\">Michigan State<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>Popular solutions include generating HTML rather than PDF output or switching to alternative systems such as RMarkdown. Here I share the results of my own experiments as I stubbornly cling to my existing LaTeX content.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-817944e elementor-widget elementor-widget-hub_fancy_heading\" data-id=\"817944e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"hub_fancy_heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t<div id=\"ld-fancy-heading-69f59111d8d5e\" class=\"ld-fancy-heading pos-rel\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"ld-fh-element d-inline-block pos-rel  elementor-heading-title lqd-highlight-custom lqd-highlight-custom-2 h2\"  > \u2018axessibility\u2019 package<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ff9e506 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ff9e506\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/ctan.org\/pkg\/axessibility?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;<strong>axessibility package<\/strong>&#8216;<\/a> aims to make formula accessible to screen readers but does not address the tagged PDF issue resulting in a very poor Ally score.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8956904 elementor-widget elementor-widget-hub_fancy_heading\" data-id=\"8956904\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"hub_fancy_heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t<div id=\"ld-fancy-heading-69f59111da0aa\" class=\"ld-fancy-heading pos-rel\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"ld-fh-element d-inline-block pos-rel  elementor-heading-title lqd-highlight-custom lqd-highlight-custom-2 h2\"  > \u2018accessibility\u2019 package<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a41da44 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a41da44\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The &#8216;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ctan.org\/pkg\/accessibility?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accessibility package<\/a><\/strong>&#8216; does create tagged PDFs for relatively simple LaTeX documents resulting in a good Ally score. In my experiments the \u2018read out loud\u2019 function did not work in Adobe Acrobat Reader. I also found that more complex LaTeX documents (those importing many packages) did not compile once the accessibility package was added<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-876691a elementor-widget elementor-widget-hub_fancy_heading\" data-id=\"876691a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"hub_fancy_heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t<div id=\"ld-fancy-heading-69f59111daf5b\" class=\"ld-fancy-heading pos-rel\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"ld-fh-element d-inline-block pos-rel  elementor-heading-title lqd-highlight-custom lqd-highlight-custom-2 h2\"  > Pandoc\/EPUB<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c1068ab elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c1068ab\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pandoc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pandoc<\/a><\/strong> (free to download) is a self-styled Swiss-army knife of format conversions. One option here is to covert LaTeX into the EPUB format supported by most e-book readers. Again, this works reasonably well (at least for simple content) and will allow readers to custom font, size, colours, etc. One downside is that it cannot be previewed within Canvas and must be downloaded.<\/p><p>Indeed, the results are not dissimilar to those offered if you select the EPUB \u2018alternative format\u2019 option when previewing PDFs in canvas<\/p><p>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sumatrapdfreader.org\/free-pdf-reader\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sumatra PDF reader<\/a><\/strong> (which also comes included with RStudio) is sufficient to view such documents but a book reader will provide better formatting options. They are not supported by Adobe Acrobat and Ally does not currently appear to score this content. I also ran into issues with internal referencing and book-like features (e.g. table of contents, index, bibliography).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5b7c241 elementor-widget elementor-widget-hub_fancy_heading\" data-id=\"5b7c241\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"hub_fancy_heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t<div id=\"ld-fancy-heading-69f59111dbdfd\" class=\"ld-fancy-heading pos-rel\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"ld-fh-element d-inline-block pos-rel  elementor-heading-title lqd-highlight-custom lqd-highlight-custom-2 h2\"  > ConteXt<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-59d2a34 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"59d2a34\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.contextgarden.net\/Main_Page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>ConTeXt<\/strong><\/a> (a cousin of LaTeX) supports tagged PDF documents. Pandoc provides a means to convert existing LaTeX documents into ConTeXt before compilation. An <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.contextgarden.net\/Installation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">installation of ConteXt<\/a><\/strong> (separate to MiKTeX) is required. Here I ran into problems with array formula and hyperref commands, and also found the need to apply some \u2018search and replace\u2019 commands (performed with sed using Cygwin) to fix section levels.<\/p><p>Tables are also problematic because the default conversion creates a table without the explicit header row that accessibility checkers look for. It is possible to recreate the table in a format that does include a header row but (so far) I haven\u2019t found an easy way to automate this step.<\/p><p>The ConTeXt syntax is different to LaTeX so making edits requires a fair bit of googling. Overall though, I felt that this gave the best results aesthetically for my various use cases (text book, some mathematics, lots of python code).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-126c9d3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-hub_fancy_heading\" data-id=\"126c9d3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"hub_fancy_heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t<div id=\"ld-fancy-heading-69f59111dcc60\" class=\"ld-fancy-heading pos-rel\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"ld-fh-element d-inline-block pos-rel  elementor-heading-title lqd-highlight-custom lqd-highlight-custom-2 h2\"  > Conclusion<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1b1360f6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1b1360f6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>For now, it seems you need to pick your own least-worst solution and accept some tradeoffs. In my case, I\u2019ve ported some content out of LaTeX but kept some low-scoring content which I still consider high value in its current form. In such cases I make students aware that it is available in other more accessible formats on request.
