AI brings both opportunities and challenges to assessment for both staff and students. As it is not possible to have a blanket ban on the use of AI we need to consider how it can be used responsibly to support the student experience and to encourage our students to be AI-savvy.<\/span><\/p><p>In this section please find the latest guidance on the use of generative AI within assessment at Queen&#8217;s.\u00a0<\/p><p><span class=\"fontSizeLarge\">In relation to assessment there are two key principles from\u00a0<strong>R-<\/strong><span class=\"fontColorPurple\"><strong>A-I<\/strong><\/span><strong>-S-E<\/strong>\u00a0that are relevant:<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cfeea88 elementor-widget__width-inherit elementor-widget elementor-widget-ld_accordion\" data-id=\"cfeea88\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"ld_accordion.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t<div class=\"accordion accordion-title-bordered accordion-md accordion-side-spacing accordion-title-bg-transparent accordion-title-circle accordion-expander-left accordion-active-has-fill\" id=\"accordion-69d79c8e28951\" role=\"tablist\" aria-multiselectable=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion-item panel \">\n\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion-heading\" role=\"tab\" id=\"heading-2181\">\n\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"accordion-title  tabindex=\"-1\">\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"collapsed\" role=\"button\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-bs-toggle=\"collapse\"\n                    tabindex=\"0\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-parent=\"#accordion-69d79c8e28951\" data-bs-parent=\"#accordion-69d79c8e28951\" href=\"#collapse-2181\" data-target=\"#collapse-2181\" data-bs-target=\"#collapse-2181\"\n\t\t\t\t\taria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"collapse-2181\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"accordion-expander\"><i class=\"lqd-icn-ess icon-ion-ios-add\"><\/i><i class=\"lqd-icn-ess icon-ion-ios-remove\"><\/i><\/span>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"accordion-title-txt\">Integrity<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t<div id=\"collapse-2181\" class=\"accordion-collapse collapse \" data-bs-parent=\"#accordion-69d79c8e28951\" role=\"tabpanel\" aria-labelledby=\"heading-2181\">\n\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion-content\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Integrity and academic rigour will be upheld.<\/strong><\/p><p>Academic integrity is of paramount importance and rigorously upheld within all programmes. Students need to be fully aware of when and how they can use AI in assessments, including any limitations on certain tools or the need to cite or document how AI has been used. If students misuse AI, they will be subject to the University's academic misconduct\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/go.qub.ac.uk\/regulations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-interception=\"off\" data-wplink-edit=\"true\"><strong>regulations<\/strong>.<\/a><\/p><p>Current tools that attempt to detect AI generated text \u2013 whether by analysing writing styles, using machine learning classification, or watermarking \u2013 cannot definitively identify AI-authored content. Worryingly, these systems often produce an unacceptably high rate of false positives.<\/p><p>In the future, with the integration of AI writing tools into platforms like Microsoft Word and Google Workplace, it is anticipated that much of our writing will include AI-generated elements. This will be similar to how we currently benefit from algorithm-driven spell checkers and grammar tools. Considering these factors, the use of text-based AI detectors is not recommended.<\/p><p>This academic year, those delivering modules will clarify if and how AI can be used when completing assessment. These skills will be essential in many future careers. Alongside this, AI can also be a valuable aid in learning and revising. However, it's crucial to use AI correctly.
