Before we look at tools and approaches which help to produce accessible recordings, let\u2019s clarify the following important terms:<\/p><div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><strong>\u25fc\ufe0f<\/strong><strong> Closed captions<\/strong> provide a text version of speech as well as other audio content such as background noise, music or sound effects. Closed captions can be turned on or off while watching a video with the click of a button. Captioning offers several benefits, as long as the captions are accurate. Captions are necessary to make video content accessible to those who are deaf or hard of hearing. On top of that, they provide assistance to English as second language (ESL) speakers, and help those with learning disabilities or attention deficits more easily maintain their concentration. Captions also make content more flexible, as people can read rather than listen (e.g. in public places, in libraries where sound cannot be used, etc.).<\/div><div style=\"padding-left: 40px\">\u00a0<\/div><div style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><strong>\u25fc\ufe0f Transcription<\/strong>\u00a0is the process in which speech or audio is converted into a written, plain text document. Transcripts are the output of transcription, and because they are plain text there is no time information attached to it. There are two main transcription practices \u2013 transcriptions can be produced by (i) auto speech recognition (ASR) where you use automated captions produced for a recorded video (e.g. using MS Teams + Stream) in order to create a transcript that you can edit and share alongside your video, or (ii) by human transcriptionists (at a cost per minute).<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>Accurate closed captions are legally required to make videos accessible. Transcripts are required to make audio-only content accessible. Captions and transcripts include the same text, so one can be used to develop the other.<\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cd3b3eb e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"cd3b3eb\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b33ced8 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"b33ced8\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-91b0e1d e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"91b0e1d\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0fa83f6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-hub_fancy_heading\" data-id=\"0fa83f6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"hub_fancy_heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t<div id=\"ld-fancy-heading-6a11c8b29e7d1\" class=\"ld-fancy-heading pos-rel\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"ld-fh-element d-inline-block pos-rel  elementor-heading-title lqd-highlight-custom lqd-highlight-custom-2 h2\"  > What does the Law state?<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5ee0ec1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5ee0ec1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Since 24 Sept 2020, the UK\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/uksi\/2018\/952\/made\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Digital Accessibility Regulations<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0mean we have a legal obligation to make any material presented digitally, fully accessible. As a public sector organisation, we must remove any obstacles or barriers to accessing content, mobile applications and services. Accessibility promotes equality, diversity and inclusion. Digital Accessibility is a core part of making teaching and learning inclusive for ALL students. Examples of video with audio content include lecture recordings, pre-recorded micro-lectures, welcome video etc. [WCAG Level A]\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ecdcbd5 elementor-align-left elementor-widget elementor-widget-ld_icon_box\" data-id=\"ecdcbd5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"ld_icon_box.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<div id=\"ld_icon_box_ecdcbd5\" class=\"iconbox d-flex flex-grow-1 pos-rel align-items-center iconbox-side\"   >\n\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"iconbox-icon-wrap  \"><div class=\"iconbox-icon-container d-inline-flex   \"><i aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"fas fa-info-circle\"><\/i><\/div><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"contents \">\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Continue to prioritise the provision of automated close captions over transcripts, unless you are creating audio resources like podcasts OR where an individual student has a requirement for 100% accurate transcripts as part of their ISSA.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f393e0b elementor-widget-divider--view-line_text elementor-widget-divider--element-align-center elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"f393e0b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-divider__text elementor-divider__element\">\n\t\t\t\tExemptions from the Regulations\t\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d10aaab elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d10aaab\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>It is worth noting that some materials are exempt from the accessibility regulations. Captions are required for all video that contains audio content.
