Canvas System Update – 17 Jul 2021

These are the latest Canvas system updates that will become available from 17 July 2021. Please click on an update to expand and view the information. If you have any questions please submit a support ticket via the help menu in Canvas.
Please note that system updates are subject to change and may be subsequently updated.   Update 1: External Tools (LTI) – SCORM Launch Links Enforcement. This update is available for the following Canvas Roles: Teacher, Teaching Assistant and Course Designer.

Signed launch links will be integrated into SCORM content. This change ensures that all SCORM content will be encrypted, meaning that only users enrolled in the course where the SCORM content was uploaded will be given access.

Canvas users with course materials containing direct links to SCORM content will need to reupload the SCORM package through the SCORM option in their Course Navigation Menu. Details about this process can be found in the SCORM Launch Links blog post.

Update 2: Users – Maintenance Windows Enforcement. This update is available for all Canvas Roles.

To better manage required maintenance for Canvas, regular maintenance windows will be implemented beginning 15 July 2021. Most maintenance windows will take place sometime between the hours of 12:00 am and 4:00 am local time on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month. Canvas may not be available to you during this time.

The maintenance window will be displayed below the Time Zone field in User Settings.

Although windows are always scheduled for two hours, most likely maintenance will only last a few minutes. Additionally, maintenance may not always be required.

23 June 2021: Rich Content Editor – Image Options File URL Field. This update is available for all Canvas Roles.

For linked and external images, the File URL field has been added to the Image Options menu.

This change allows an image URL to be updated without having to remove and replace the image.

When an image is added to the Rich Content Editor via URL, the Image Options menu includes the File URL field. The URL can be updated to change the image displayed in the editor.

07 July 2021: Rich Content Editor – Media Uploads Alt Text Adjustments. This update is available for all Canvas Roles.

The Upload Media window allows the name of the file to be changed before the file is added to the Rich Content Editor.

This change allows a file name to be updated without having to remove the file, rename the file, and upload the file again. The name of the file generates the alt text used by screen readers.

When a file is selected for a media upload and the preview is generated, a text field displays below the preview with the name of the file. The file can be renamed before the file is submitted and uploaded in the Rich Content Editor.

07 July 2021: Pages – Mark as Done Button Placement. This update is available for the following Canvas Roles: Student.

The Mark as Done button for students has been moved to the bottom of the page.

This change aligns consistency through other Canvas areas and places the button in a more intuitive location.

When students are required to read a page and mark it as done, the Mark as Done button has been moved to the bottom of the page. The button can be marked more easily after students have reached the bottom of the page. Previously users must scroll back up to the top of the page to mark the page as done.

07 July 2021: Assignments – Empty Assignment Description Content. This update is available for the following Canvas Roles: Student.

The default text has been updated for description content that is blank.

This change helps minimize confusion for students regarding descriptions with no content.

When an assignment is created with no description, the assignment displays to students as: No additional details were added for this assignment. Previously the content read as No Content.

07 July 2021: Gradebook – Gradebook CSV Column Order. This update is available for the following Canvas Roles: Teacher and Teaching Assistant.

The Gradebook CSV assignment columns display in the same order as shown in the Gradebook for an individual user.

This change fulfils expectations for users and aligns the Gradebook view and CSV file.

When an instructor or other grader customizes the Gradebook assignment columns and downloads the CSV file, the CSV file assignment columns display in the same order as shown in the user’s Gradebook. Previously CSV files were always ordered by Assignment Group ID and Assignment Order.
