Theme: Managing Breakout Rooms Online

The AHSS Digital Learning Team hosted a panel discussion on the theme of ‘Managing Breakout Rooms Online’. Colleagues from Queen’s Management School (QMS), who had used Breakout Rooms and online small-group discussions throughout previous terms, shared their experiences, advice, and tips for methods to effectively facilitate this form of discussion.

Session Highlights

The session focused on ways to achieve intended learning outcomes, collaboration and group discussion using online Breakout Rooms.

Dr. Stephanie Graham, Dr. Kieran Conroy and Dr. Brenda Clerkin addressed some of the most imperative questions in the effective management of online Breakout Rooms, including:

  • How do I/Should I encourage students to turn their cameras on during small-group discussion online?
  • What kind of tasks are conducive to online Breakout Rooms?
  • How do I facilitate group work during Breakout Room discussions online?
  • What do I do if something goes wrong when setting up Breakout Rooms?

This was a very engaging session which offered huge value to anyone who has already been, or maybe just thinking about, using Breakout Rooms online. We encourage you to have a look at the recording of this conversation, as I am sure there is something for everyone. The AHSS Digital Learning Team would like to thank members of our panel for their insight and advice.
