Getting Started with Canvas New Analytics
This blog post describes the Canvas New Analytics feature and provides links to additional support resources.
What is New Analytics?
Canvas New Analytics is a learning analytics tool that allows you to filter and compare student cohorts and individuals to class averages, for all grade-based Canvas activities such as Assignments, Quizzes, and Discussions. It also contains information about missing and late assignments as well as the ability to email all students within specific defined parameters such as missing an assignment. Data is refreshed in every 24 hours and only active student enrolments are included in data for New Analytics.
Canvas New Analytics will replace the current analytics in 2020 however, if you would like to use this feature before that time, you have the ability to turn it on within your Canvas course.
Note: When you turn on New Analytics the existing Analytics is turned off automatically. You can turn New Analytics on and off as you wish but you cannot have the two sets of Analytics available simultaneously.
Turning on New Analytics
To turn on new analytics in your Canvas course go to the ‘Home’ page and click on ‘Settings’ (see image below).
When in settings there is a number of tabs along the top of the page. Click on the one that says ‘Feature Options’.
In feature options look for the feature ‘New Course and User Analytics’ and switch the tab to a green tick (see image below).
New Analytics is now switched on.
How should I use New Analytics?
- View course grade and participation analytics for an individual student
- View grade average information by course, section and student
- View Weekly Course Activity which shows level of activity and which items students on in a course.
- Send a message to students who did not submit or perform well on a given assignment.
The video below provides an overview of how to use New Analytics.
