{"id":9498,"date":"2020-12-06T08:49:32","date_gmt":"2020-12-06T08:49:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/digitaldevelopment\/?p=9498"},"modified":"2024-07-04T11:24:51","modified_gmt":"2024-07-04T10:24:51","slug":"hotspot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/digihubtest\/2020\/12\/06\/hotspot\/","title":{"rendered":"One New Thing: Interactive Hotspot Questions"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"9498\" class=\"elementor elementor-9498\" data-elementor-post-type=\"post\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0a517f6 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"0a517f6\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6575ede elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6575ede\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Many of us have used Turningpoint (\u201cPRS\u201d) and may associate it with the infuriating error\u00a0\u00a0\u201c<em>TurningPoint Desktop has detected an open version of PowerPoint<\/em>\u201d or dragging around boxes of clickers, but some updates have come along to make our lives easier:<\/p><ul><li>A new release, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.turningtechnologies.com\/downloads\/turningpoint-web\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Turningpoint Web<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u201d avoids the PowerPoint error\u00a0<\/li><li>Students can use a phone app or the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/participant.turningtechnologies.eu\/en\/join\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Turningpoint website<\/a><\/strong>  instead of clickers.<\/li><li>A new question format \u2013 Hotspot questions!<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9cd39ac elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9cd39ac\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Hotspot Questions<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-59cb3bb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"59cb3bb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Once installed, a new question format, \u201c<em>Hotspot<\/em>\u201d, appears in the Turningpoint PowerPoint tab. When selected it will ask you to select an image from your computer, type a question, and add a \u201chotspot\u201d that corresponds to the correct location on the image.<\/p><p>When drawing the hotspot you can only use rectangles so if the correct area is complex you can either:<\/p><ul><li>Add several rectangles<\/li><li>Add no hotspot and just point to the correct location with your mouse<\/li><li>Show an image in the next slide with the correct answer<\/li><\/ul><p>For anatomy, this question format has been a great addition, it allows me to see if students can apply their knowledge to diagrams and photos. It is a lot quicker than the usual, staid MCQ type questions and so does not interrupt the flow of the lecture.<\/p><p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9006 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/digitallearning-2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/159\/2020\/12\/HOTSPOT2.jpg\" alt=\"Hotspot Question Example\" width=\"644\" height=\"474\" \/><\/p><p>Another advantage is that it can make you aware if students are profoundly misunderstanding the material.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0b7a052 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"0b7a052\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Conclusion<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bca915a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bca915a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The usefulness of this question type is obvious for a visual subject like anatomy, but I am sure there are innovative uses possible in other disciplines for example:<\/p><ul><li>Interpreting aspects of a graph\/histogram.<\/li><li>Selecting a spot on a map to show where participants are from.<\/li><li>Finding an error in a paragraph of text\/code.<\/li><li>Indicating a current state of mind or agreement on a spectrum<\/li><\/ul><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9005 size-full\"
