She is interested in all kinds of linguistic creativity, from memes to metaphors. As Principal Investigator on this project, she drives the research into how contemporary fiction represents the minds of characters with dementia (see <a href=\"https:\/\/pure.qub.ac.uk\/en\/publications\/dementia-mind-styles-in-contemporary-narrative-fiction-2\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/pure.qub.ac.uk\/en\/publications\/dementia-mind-styles-in-contemporary-narrative-fiction-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lugea 2022<\/a>). Gemma&#8217;s latest book, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/policy.bristoluniversitypress.co.uk\/critical-questions-for-ageing-societies\" target=\"_blank\">Critical Questions for Ageing Societies<\/a> busts a number of myths about our ageing societies. She works closely with fellow Co-Investigator Paula Devine on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ark.ac.uk\/ap\/\">ARK Ageing programme<\/a>. Jan has published two novels, two micro-fictions collections and a short story collection. Her novel&nbsp;<em>The Fire Starters<\/em> won the EU Prize for Literature for Ireland in 2019.  Jan has run many projects exploring how people living with Dementia can access and utilise the arts. Along with Jane from this project, Jan co-facilitated the creative writing workshops and commissioned the short stories that make up our anthology, <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/blackwells.co.uk\/bookshop\/product\/9781848408616?gC=5a105e8b&amp;gclid=EAIaIQobChMI1OG_prDLgAMVEa93Ch0Xkgz3EAQYBCABEgJutPD_BwE\" target=\"_blank\">A Little Unsteadily into Light<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignfull is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:23% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"945\" height=\"885\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/dementiafiction\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2020\/10\/Paula1-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-88 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/dementiafiction\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2020\/10\/Paula1-1-1.jpg 945w, https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/dementiafiction\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2020\/10\/Paula1-1-1-300x281.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/dementiafiction\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2020\/10\/Paula1-1-1-768x719.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 945px) 100vw, 945px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\">Dr.&nbsp;Paula Devine is a Co-Investigator whose research focuses on&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ark.ac.uk\/nilt\" target=\"_blank\">what the public think<\/a>&nbsp;about key social issues affecting their lives, and making sure that research provides&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/qpol.qub.ac.uk\/reflecting-on-20-years-of-social-attitudes\/\" target=\"_blank\">vital evidence for shaping policy<\/a>.&nbsp; She also&nbsp;coordinates the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ark.ac.uk\/ap\" target=\"_blank\">ARK Ageing Programme<\/a>, which&nbsp;brings together&nbsp;practitioners,&nbsp;voluntary organisations,&nbsp;academics, policy makers and the&nbsp;general&nbsp;public to explore what it means to grow older in Northern Ireland.
