Well, Kiley Reid begs to differ. Her 2019 novel, <em>Such a Fun Age<\/em>, pokes fun at the performative nature of white female &#8216;wokeness&#8217; while also exposing its insidious underbelly\u2013it highlights how popular feminism prioritises the white, middle-class experience. This preoccupation, Reid slyly suggests, threatens to silence and make invisible the voices and experiences of women of colour. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/americanists\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2023\/11\/kiley-reid-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1749\" width=\"634\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/americanists\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2023\/11\/kiley-reid-2.jpeg 940w, https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/americanists\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2023\/11\/kiley-reid-2-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/americanists\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2023\/11\/kiley-reid-2-768x432.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 634px) 100vw, 634px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>&#8220;The dominant culture of popular feminism [is a] primarily white, middle class feminism that\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">seizes the spotlight\u00a0<\/span>in an economy of visibility and renders other feminisms less visible&#8221;<\/em><\/p><cite>Banet-Weiser 23<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\t<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-gif aligncenter\">\n\t\t<figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-gif-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top:56%\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<iframe src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/xT9KVGOiH73OspJtRe\" title=\"you cant sit with us\"><\/iframe>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n\t<\/div>\n\t\n\n\n<p>Our first clue to the devaluing of black voices in the novel comes in the very first chapter. We are thrust into a racially charged confrontation in an upscale Phillidelphia grocery store where Emira&#8217;s body is rendered hypervisible under the white gaze of the security guard:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;She saw herself in her entirety: Her face-full brown lips, a tiny nose, a high forehead covered with black bangs [&#8230;] All she could see was something very dark and skinny&#8221;<\/p><cite>10<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Reid immediately draws attention to Emira&#8217;s race as something that renders her hypervisible: &#8220;brown&#8221;, &#8220;black&#8221;, &#8220;dark&#8221;. At the same time, however, Emira is paradoxically rendered<em> invisible<\/em>. Her voice is marginalised while the voices of white people around her\u2013the woman in the store, Peter, and even three-year-old Briar\u2013are amplified. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;&#8221;I&#8217;ll call her father and he can come down here. He&#8217;s an old white guy so I&#8217;m sure everyone will feel better'&#8221; <\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"735\" height=\"490\" class=\"wp-image-1658\" style=\"width: 500px\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/americanists\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2023\/11\/image-2.png\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/americanists\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2023\/11\/image-2.png 735w, https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/americanists\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2023\/11\/image-2-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 735px) 100vw, 735px\" \/><\/p><p>&#8220;The security guard pointed a finger at her face. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">&#8216;<em>I am speaking to the child<\/em>&#8216;&#8221;<\/span><\/p><cite>14<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>White voices also monopolise the novel on a structural level. While initally centered on Emira&#8217;s perspective, the narrative shifts, as the voices of Alix and Kelley begin to filter in, overwhelming Emira&#8217;s personal narrative. This multi-perspectival style transforms Emira into a minority voice within the very narrative structure of the book itself. Reid devotes chapters Alix&#8217;s teenage years and her encounters with a young Kelley, in contrast to the scant pages on Emira&#8217;s history. This is undoubtedly a deliberate choice by Reid that culminates in an awkward thanksgiving dinner where personal histories are spilled over turkey. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\t<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-gif alignleft\">\n\t\t<figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-gif-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top:100%\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<iframe src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/xT0xehobm5dF3obOrC\" title=\"thanksgiving\"><\/iframe>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>What ensues is what Alix mentally terms a game called &#8220;Which One of Us Is Actually More Racist&#8221; (228) or as one reviewer from <em>The New York Times<\/em> puts it: &#8220;white liberal anxieties play out in a tug-of-war for Emira&#8217;s affections&#8221;: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201c&#8217;Emira deserves to know who she\u2019s dating.\u201d No, you know what, Alex?&#8217; Kelley leaned forward with one arm on the table. &#8216;Emira deserves a job where she gets to wear her own fucking clothes.'&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p><cite>227<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, the presumptious attitude of Alix and Kelley as they dictate what they believe is best for Emira reveals the superficial nature of white allyship. By excluding Emira from a conversation that directly concerns her, the white characters inadvertanely reinforce Banet-Weiser&#8217;s proposition that popular feminism &#8220;refuses intersectionality, and often erases and devalues women of color&#8221; (13-14). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<p>Alix&#8217;s letter writing business, LetHerSpeak, best exemplifies this mode of feminism. Her business, kickstarted by writing &#8220;over one hundred letters and receiv[ing] over nine hundred dollars\u2019 worth of merchandise&#8221; (20) represents a &#8220;corporate-friendly feminism&#8221; that embraces consumerism without challenging capitalist structures (Banet-Weiser 12).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"604\" height=\"340\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rlE4gGkiC-4?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;neoliberal feminism is one in which the values [of] neoliberalism\u2014ever-expanding markets, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">entrepreneurialism<\/span>, a focus on the individual\u2014are embraced, not challenged, by feminism&#8221;<\/p><cite>Banet-Weiser 11-12<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Such a Fun Age<\/em> locates this wave of entreprenurial feminism firmly within the digital realm. Reid satirises the rise of the white female entrepreneur to Instagram fame through Alix who &#8220;earn[s] another thousand followers&#8221; after &#8220;Small Business Femme&#8221; posts an Instagram photo of Alix breastfeeding onstage, captioned &#8220;<em>Find You a Woman Who Can Do Both<\/em>&#8221; (29). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: White Woman\u2019s Instagram\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"152\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/20bNmfHntXFvYInCEQZYfp?si=TZvwFzrjSlC4Djio2leOow&#038;utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>On the other hand, Emira remains invisible within this digital world: &#8220;oh no, I don&#8217;t have Instagram&#8221; (Reid 135). Alix&#8217;s suggestion that Emira wear one of her &#8220;white\u00a0<em>LetHer Speak<\/em> polos&#8221; while babysitting not only carries racial undertones of white ownership and black subservience but it also reduces Emira to a tokenistic accessory; a living embodiment of Alix&#8217;s supposedly inclusive brand (Reid 49).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Tokenism intensifies as the novel progresses, culminating in a television interview where Alix exploits Emira as a passive prop to endorse her company. During the interview, Emira is thrust into the &#8216;spotlight of visibility&#8217; and her trauma is transformed into a marketable commodity:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;Emira embodies much of the spirit in my business LetHer Speak,\u201d she said. \u201cNot only did she stick up for herself, but she listens to herself, and this is exactly the kind of person Peter and I want around our girls&#8221;<\/p><cite>285<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, in the cathartic final pages of the novel Emira reclaims her verbal power. Leveraging her newfound visibility, Emira hits Alix where it hurts\u2013her public image\u2013and denies Alix and the wider media the opportunity to monetise her trauma:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;I will not actually be joining the Chamberlains full-time? Or like&#8230; at all [&#8230;] it would be best if we go our seperate ways and our paths&#8230; never like came back together.&#8221;<\/p><cite>285-286<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\t<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-gif aligncenter\">\n\t\t<figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-gif-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top:71%\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<iframe src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/3o7qDSOvfaCO9b3MlO\" title=\"mic drop\"><\/iframe>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n\t<\/div>\n\t\n\n\n<p>Through its exploration of everyday racial microaggressions, <em>Such a Fun Age<\/em> urges its readers, especially its white readership, to consider the ways in which we wield our voices, or in this new digital age, our keyboards, to inadvertently marginalise the experiences of women of colour.
