{"id":217,"date":"2017-10-18T10:00:05","date_gmt":"2017-10-18T10:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/africa\/?p=217"},"modified":"2017-10-18T10:00:05","modified_gmt":"2017-10-18T10:00:05","slug":"john-blacking-african-music","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/africa\/2017\/10\/18\/john-blacking-african-music\/","title":{"rendered":"Prof. John Blacking"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>African ethnomusicology<\/h4>\n<p>John Blacking was Professor of anthroplogly at Queen&#8217;s University between 1969 and 2000.\u00a0 After a BA degree under Prof. Meyer Fortes at King College and Cambridge, he moved to South Africa to work with the famous Prof. Hugh Tracey.\u00a0 He did there a PhD (with a dissertation on Venda music), then obtained a lectureship and eventually a professorship at the University of Witwatersrand.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2017\/10\/Blacking.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" alt=\"Blacking\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2017\/10\/Blacking.gif\" width=\"157\" height=\"190\" \/><\/a>In 1969, after problems with the Apartheid administration, he moved to Queen&#8217;s University Belfast to take up the first chair of Anthropology in Ireland.
