Mathematica for Laptop or Off-Campus Use

In order to use Mathematica via the School of Mathematics & Physics license you will need to request a license from Wolfram Research via their user portal. Read these instructions carefully before clicking through using the links at the bottom of the page.

Read these notes carefully and act on them. At least 20% of users seem to have trouble following the very simple instructions below.

  • If you don’t include the information we need in the request we will reject it.
  • If your request is rejected then clearly you didn’t follow the instructions. Review them carefully before submitting another request.
  • Don’t submit multiple requests just because you don’t get a confirmation within 5 minutes.
  • These licenses are only available to staff and students in the School of Mathematics and Physics. We check IDs.

When you access the Wolfram user portal you will see a screen like this:

  • First/last names should need no explanation.
  • The email address supplied must be your QUB email address.
  • In the department field please select either Mathematics or Physics depending on which the section of school you are mostly associated with.
  • In the notes section, please include your staff/student number and a brief note to explain who you are, eg. “I’m a PhD student in CPP”, or “I’m a Level 3 student on AMA3999”. This will help us to process your request – requests without this information will be rejected.
  • You must select Mathematica (single machine) as the Product. Do not select the mathLM option!

After your request has been submitted it will be forwarded to the School IT staff for authorisation. Whilst this is pending you will be issued with a temporary 14 day trial activation key and a download link to the Mathematica installer for your preferred OS.

If the request is approved by the School IT staff your trial license key will be automatically converted into a full license.  You will receive an email from Wolfram as confirmation.  You do not need to take any further action. If you need to re-download in the future, the same link can be accessed via the Wolfram user portal.

If the request is rejected by the School IT staff, your temporary license key will be immediately revoked.  Any days still remaining within the trial period will become void and the application will cease to function.  You will receive a email from Wolfram to explain the reason for the denial.

The School will revoke license keys if we see any signs of abuse (eg. software piracy), or when users leave QUB or move to a different School. We reserve the right to do so in other exceptional circumstances, as authorised by School Management.

You will be required to register an account with Wolfram in order to access these links.  The email address linked to your Wolfram account must be your QUB email address or your request will be denied.
