At the minute, you might find that Ovid databases such as MEDLINE and EMBASE aren’t accessible via Internet Explorer in the QUB Student Computing Centres. Clicking on the links to these databases in QCat Discover or in LibGuides might bring you to an ‘Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage’ error message.

The library is currently working with IT to fix this problem.

In the meantime, the Ovid databases are accessible in the Student Computing Centres via Chrome or Firefox (though in these browsers the databases may take approximately 60 seconds to load).

If you have any queries about the Ovid databases, please contact Richard Fallis, Subject Librarian for Medicine, Dentistry & Biomedical Sciences: r.fallis@qub.ac.uk

Plans are now well underway for the work required to substantially increase the number of reader seats and PC spaces in the McClay Library during summer 2013. Over 200 additional seats will be created on the ground floor by removing the office space to the south of the building and opening up the area between the atrium and the Botanic Gardens side of the building for student use. The opportunity is also being taken to increase the size of the student lounge and toilets on the ground floor. Other planned service improvements in the McClay Library during summer 2013 include enhancing the performance of the wireless network, installation of an automatic book sorter which will improve book circulation and routine replacement of a number of PCs for student use.

Timing:

The work will begin in early June as soon as the examination period is over. Expansion of the student lounge/ground floor toilets and installation of the book sorter is scheduled for early summer and should be completed by mid-late July. The remainder of the work in the atrium area will continue throughout the summer.

While the work on the ground floor must be carried out during Library opening hours as it is so extensive, the remaining activities (wireless enhancement, enabling works, etc.) will be scheduled outside Library opening hours where possible.

Impact on McClay Library Services:

All Library services will be delivered throughout the development work but we have identified the following specific areas where some adjustments will be required.

Access to the atrium will be restricted from early June with a protective hoarding erected across the entire length from East to West so that existing offices can be removed and new spaces created to the south.

Short Loan will operate on a closed access basis during June and early July (dates to be confirmed) with an on-demand fetching service for access to stock operational throughout staffed hours. Short Loan items will be available for 2-week loan throughout the summer vacation to minimize the need to access this material in an ongoing way.

Collection of Reserved Items will be via the Borrower Services Desk from early June until late August (dates to be confirmed).

Book Returns will be managed via the Borrower Services Desk while the book sorter is being installed; self-service book returns will not be possible during this period.

Self-service Book Loans will be restricted to the upper floors for a brief period (dates to be confirmed) while the Borrower Services Desk is re-configured to accommodate the book sorter. Borrower Services staff will facilitate loans where necessary.

Training Rooms

The McClay Library training rooms (Auditorium, Training Rooms 1 and 2) will not be available from 1 June until early September. Information Services training courses will be provided in the Peter Froggatt Centre during this period. Training Room 1 will no longer exist after the development of the McClay Library. This means that Information Services may be unable to accommodate Directorates and Schools who occasionally booked the McClay Library training rooms. For more information contact Patrick Brannigan, itcourses@qub.ac.uk.

Impact on Library Users:

While every effort will be made to minimize disruption, there will be some unavoidable noise (especially on the ground floor) over the summer months. The work at the Borrower Services Desk cannot be isolated so this is being scheduled for early summer and should be completed well in advance of the re-sit period.

We will endeavour to programme all work in such a way that large areas of the library are undisturbed at any given period.
