Summer Opportunities – advice from a Student Guide…
The summer is almost here, so now is the time to think about what you can do with your four months off. A four month holiday might seem like an attractive prospect but it can seem very long if you have nothing to occupy yourself, which also gives to the opportunity to earn some cash to have fun with!
The University itself offer On Campus jobs over the summer period, which usually involves preparing for the new intake of students in September with some posts lasting the majority of the summer and others for the few weeks before term starts. To be eligible to apply and receive notification of jobs you need to register with On Campus jobs which is done through www.qub.qol.ac.uk. Other part-time work in Belfast or your home town can also be found – useful links include www.jobcentreonline.com and www.nijobs.com.
If you are feeling slightly more adventurous there are plenty of schemes and programmes to apply for that can lead to a summer of paid work, fun and travel! Depending on your course there are summer opportunities for internships abroad e.g. IEASTE, www.iaeste.org.uk offer internships to science students and other programmes such as Project Children, www.pcinternprogram.org, who offer vocational internships in USA which are open to all students. Both programs provide funding or paid work and with Project Children you have the opportunity to live with an American family. There are also plenty of opportunities to work and travel through programs such as USIT and JET.
The Careers, Employability and Skills service at QUB, www.qub.ac.uk/careers have lots of resources to help you find summer internships and part-time work and are available for consultation to help with finding opportunities and preparation for applications and interviews.
